Living in a building in Woodlawn Park means two kinds of doors: the suite door you control and the common doors the building manages. We service both, working within house rules on the outer hardware and giving your own door a cylinder, strike and closer that suit how the unit is actually used. Nearby, we also work in Cheapside, Lambs Corners and Peacock Point.

In Woodlawn Park we think about how a door is actually used before choosing hardware. A back door staff prop open needs a different answer than a front door a family uses twice a day. A side entry for a teenager who forgets keys may want a keypad. We ask those questions first, then match the lock to the habit.

Homes and businesses, one call.

  1. Explained before any tool comes out. You will hear what we found, what we suggest and why, before anything is changed. If you want a minute to think, take it.
  2. Choices, not a single answer. Most problems have more than one fix. We lay out the practical options and the trade-offs, then let you choose the one that fits your home and budget.
  3. A tidy doorstep. Shavings swept, packaging taken away, the old hardware offered to you or disposed of. The only sign we were there is a lock that works.
  4. Open 24/7, same fees any hour. Send a photo of the lock.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 57 in 100 homes · older homes
  • About 57% of homes in Haldimand County were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Established homes often have non-standard bores and backsets from an earlier generation of hardware. A locksmith working in such an area carries adapter plates and cylinders in the older sizes, so an upgrade fits the existing door instead of forcing a new one.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 84% of homes in Haldimand County (2021 Census).Detached houses collect hardware from every renovation. A locksmith visiting one often finds three keyways, two finishes and one door that never latched right. Sorting all of that into a consistent, working set is a satisfying afternoon's work.

Asked and answered

What is an interchangeable core, and how do I know if we have one?

An interchangeable core is a small, self-contained cylinder that slides out of the lock with a special control key and drops back in on a new combination. Look at the keyway: a figure-eight shaped face on a lever or mortise housing is the usual sign. Buildings choose them because a lost key or a staff change is handled by swapping the core rather than taking the lock apart, and a locksmith can carry cores pinned to your system.

Part of the key is sticking out. Can I just pull it with pliers?

If a good length shows and the plug is at its normal rest position, a firm straight pull sometimes works. The risk is pushing instead of pulling, or twisting, which drives the piece deeper and can bend a pin. If it does not come on the first gentle try, stop there and leave it for extractor tools, which grip the cuts without loading the cylinder.

Which parts usually need replacing?

Springs, first and foremost: the latch spring, the hub spring that returns the knob, and the small springs on the deadbolt levers. After that, the spindle and knob set screws, a hub whose square has worn round, a worn deadbolt lever or follower, and on later locks the cylinder set screw or the cylinder itself. Bolts, cases and trim are almost always kept, cleaned and refitted rather than replaced.

What happens with our fire exit doors and panic bars?

The outside cylinder on an exit door controls entry only, and it can be rekeyed like any other. The inside stays as it must: one push or one turn, no key, no special knowledge, on the exit door itself and on any door on the way to it. A locksmith will not add a keyed device to the inside of an exit, and will point out one if it already exists.
