Broken Key Extraction

In the parking lot your car key snapped in the driver's door. You are holding the plastic head with the buttons on it, the metal blade is inside the lock, and the spare is on a hook at home.

In plain words

The tools are simple and precise. A hook extractor is a thin strip of spring steel with a barb at the tip; it slides along the groove of the keyway above or below the fragment, snags one of the cuts, and walks it out. A spiral extractor works like a tiny screw, threading into the ridges of the cuts and gripping as it turns. Fine-tipped extractor pliers handle a piece that shows above the face. A tension tool brings a turned plug back to rest. None of these push inward, which is the whole point: the piece comes out the way it went in and the cylinder stays whole.

The call
The key went in like any other morning, you turned it, and something gave with a small metallic click. The bow is still between your fingers. The rest of the blade is sitting inside the deadbolt, and the door is locked.

How the visit goes

Hands fitting a dark metal door knob onto a white door with a screwdriver, a tool belt at the waist. — Woodlawn Park
  1. Scene 1

    The half in your hand

The bow and stub you are holding are worth a look before anything else. The cuts on it identify the key blank and give most of the bitting, so a replacement can be read straight from it and the fragment once they are side by side. Its condition tells a story too: thinning at the cuts, a slight bend, a crack line or a shiny worn tip all say the key was near the end of its life. The locksmith also asks about spares. A crisp spare, or the key code tag that came with the lock, is a better pattern for the new key than any worn copy.

  2. Scene 2

Drawing it out with a hook extractor

Every keyway has grooves, called wards, that run along its length above and below the blade. A hook extractor is a slim strip of spring steel thin enough to ride in one of those grooves beside the fragment. The locksmith slides it in past the broken piece, rotates it slightly so the barbed tip catches a cut in the blade, and draws it back out in a straight line. The pins are lifted clear as the piece passes them, exactly as they are when a key is withdrawn. It is a patient, felt process, and the cylinder is untouched by it.

  3. Scene 3

A key cut from the pattern, not the wear

You leave with a key that was cut to the lock's original specification rather than traced from the tired blade that just failed. That difference shows every time you use it: it seats fully, lifts each pin cleanly and turns without a wiggle. Two or three copies made from that fresh cut give you spares that are as good as the first. The old bent or thinning keys that shared the ring are worth retiring now, because a key that has started to bend has started to crack, and the next one to snap will be one of them.

What shapes the quoteJarvis Lock & Key Specialists

Number of keys cut
Copies are counted individually. One replacement for a single occupant and four for a household are different lines, and you choose the number on the spot.
Vehicle key electronics
Fitting a new blade to a chip head, or moving the chip and remote into a new shell, is separate from the extraction and quoted as such, as is any ignition check.
When you call
Whatever hour you call about a broken key extraction — morning, evening, a weekend or a holiday — the amount is the same. Locksmiths are reachable at any time, and the exact figure is confirmed on site once the technician has seen how deep the fragment sits.

Asked and answered

Part of the key is sticking out. Can I just pull it with pliers?

If a good length shows and the plug is at its normal rest position, a firm straight pull sometimes works. The risk is pushing instead of pulling, or twisting, which drives the piece deeper and can bend a pin. If it does not come on the first gentle try, stop there and leave it for extractor tools, which grip the cuts without loading the cylinder.

The key broke while the door was locked. Can you still get me in?

Yes. The fragment comes out first, because nothing else can happen while it blocks the keyway. With the cylinder clear and the plug at rest, the door is opened by the same non-destructive methods used for any lockout, then a working key is cut and tested. If the door is a rental, the visit is noted for the building manager on request.

What should I do while I wait for the locksmith?

Put both halves of the key somewhere safe, note whether the door or vehicle is locked, and leave the keyway alone. If it is bitter cold, keep the storm door closed so the lock is not taking freezing rain. Have identification ready, or vehicle papers for a car. If the door is open, stay near it. That is all; the extraction goes smoother for a lock nobody has poked at.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 57 in 100 homes · older homes
  • About 57% of homes in Haldimand County were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Established homes often have non-standard bores and backsets from an earlier generation of hardware. A locksmith working in such an area carries adapter plates and cylinders in the older sizes, so an upgrade fits the existing door instead of forcing a new one.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 84% of homes in Haldimand County (2021 Census).Detached houses collect hardware from every renovation. A locksmith visiting one often finds three keyways, two finishes and one door that never latched right. Sorting all of that into a consistent, working set is a satisfying afternoon's work.
