Lost Keys — Same-Visit Rekey

The keys fell out of a gym bag somewhere between the arena and the parking lot. The ring has a tag from the building with the unit number on it.

In plain words

A key ring rarely holds only house keys, so a same-visit rekey looks at everything that was on it. The mechanical house keys are handled by repinning the cylinders. A garage door remote is erased from the opener's memory and the remaining remotes are paired again. A building fob or access card is deactivated by the property manager, and the locksmith can help you make that call. A car key with a chip is a separate service through the automotive side of the trade, since the vehicle's immobiliser has to forget it. Sorting the ring item by item means nothing that opened your life last week still does.

The call
A roommate moved out on bad terms and says the key was left on the counter. It was not. You have already changed the Wi-Fi password, but the front door still opens for a key that could be anywhere.

How the visit goes

Hands fitting a dark metal door knob onto a white door with a screwdriver, a tool belt at the waist. — Selkirk
  1. Scene 1

    What was on the ring

The next few minutes are spent on the ring itself, because a key ring is a bundle of different problems. House keys point to cylinders that will be repinned. A garage remote points to an opener whose memory should be cleared. A building fob or parking card points to a property manager. A car key with a chip points to the automotive side of the trade. A tag with an address, a licence lost in the same bag, or a work lanyard in the same pocket changes how soon the household side should be settled. Listing it all before any tool comes out means nothing on the ring is forgotten when the van pulls away.

  2. Scene 2

Handling a restricted or high-security keyway

Restricted and patented keyways rekey in much the same way, with more parts and a little more care. A high-security cylinder's own elements, a sidebar's finger pins, a rotating element or another system-specific part, are reset to the new key's profile alongside the ordinary pins, and the finished plug is checked before refitting. Key blanks for these systems are issued through whatever authorised channel that system uses, a letter, a registered account, a dealer agreement, or sometimes a key card; bring whatever credential you were given. The reward is that copies of the new key can only be made through that same channel, one of the stronger kinds of key control a household can have.

  3. Scene 3

The code written down for next time

The new combination is recorded as a short code, either on a card the locksmith gives you or on the key tag, and a copy stays in the locksmith's job notes if you wish. That code is what makes future copies accurate: a key cut to code has fresh, original depths, while a copy of a worn key inherits every rounded edge. It also means a lost key years from now is met with a different code, never a repeat. Keep the card with the house papers, and when a new key is needed, ask for it to be cut from the code rather than traced from a tired one.

In the van

  • Pin tweezers and shims
  • Key blanks in common keyways
  • Top pins and cylinder springs
  • Key gauge and decoder
  • Code key machine

What shapes the quoteJarvis Lock & Key Specialists

The kind of lock each cylinder lives in
Knob, lever, deadbolt, mortise and rim cylinders come out of the door differently and take different care to refit. A mortise cylinder in a century home is more involved than a builder-grade knob.
Electronic credentials on the same ring
Clearing a garage opener's memory and re-pairing remotes, changing keypad codes or helping report a building fob are small tasks the quote names separately.
Whether the doors can share one key as they are
Cylinders from the same keyway family are pinned alike with no extra parts. A door from a different family needs a compatible cylinder swapped in if you want a single key, and that part is quoted separately.

Asked and answered

How long does a whole-house rekey take?

Plan on an hour or two for a typical house with three or four cylinders, including the walk-through, identification, pinning, cutting and testing. Each additional cylinder adds a little, as does swapping a cylinder to bring a mismatched door onto the same key, resetting a homeowner-rekeyable lock or clearing a garage opener. The locksmith gives a realistic window on the phone once the list of doors is known.

How many new keys should I ask for?

Count the people who genuinely need one and add one for a known spare location: each adult, a teenager, a caregiver or regular sitter, the neighbour who checks the house, the landlord if you rent. Keys are cut on site, so the number is easy to settle during the visit. Fewer keys with names attached is the point; another can always be cut later from the code.

Do I need to be there for the whole visit?

An authorised adult should be present at the start, for identification and to agree the list of doors and the number of keys, and at the end, to test every key and take the count. In between, the work happens at the doors and on the van, so you are free to get on with your day inside. A property manager or a family member with your authorisation can stand in if you cannot be there.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 57 in 100 homes · older homes
  • About 57% of homes in Haldimand County were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Older doors are usually thicker and made of solid wood, which is good news. They take a deadbolt well, hold longer strike screws, and reward reinforcement. The locksmith measures the thickness and backset so new hardware fits without fresh holes.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 84% of homes in Haldimand County (2021 Census).Garage entry doors on detached houses are often the household's real front door, used more than the formal entry. They deserve the same quality of lock, and keying them alike with the house means one key does the whole daily routine.
